Umicore Inaugurates Second pCAM Mass Production Line in Kokkola
Umicore recently inaugurated its second pCAM mass production line at its plant in Kokkola. pCAM stands for precursor cathode active materials and is a critical component in the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
The event on April 10th was festively graced by the local choir and the presence of Kokkola’s Mayor, Stina Mattila.
With twenty years of experience in research and development of precursor chemistry and process technology, Umicore in February started the full scale production of its second state-of-the-art line, that excels in quality, capacity, costs, and environmental performance. The production line uses a new type of product and process, with special attention to improving the energy and water balance, and thereby significantly reducing the carbon footprint and production costs.
The degree of automation has been maximized, optimizing the use of production space, with increased productivity, better process control, less manual work, and higher quality levels. Additionally, high-tech gas and dust extraction systems ensure a clean and healthy working environment.
"The design, project management, construction, and commissioning of the new precursor production line has been extraordinary, meeting time and budget constraints, and demonstrating excellence. The steady improvement of production rates month after month, reaching full capacity without any hiccups, is a testament to the experience and competence gained over years of hard work and collaboration within the organization. This achievement is a clear demonstration of our commitment to innovation and sustainability."
