Umicore Kokkola

Located in Kokkola on Finland’s west coast, our highly automated hydrometallurgical facility is the largest cobalt refining plant outside China. Operational since 1968 and part of Umicore since 2019, it employs 400 people and is a major European battery precursor site.

With decades of R&D expertise in refining, recycling, and processing cobalt into high-purity chemicals, we produce cathode precursors essential for llithium-ion batteries, further enhancing battery performance and powering cleaner mobility worldwide.

Safety, sustainability, and ethical sourcing are at the core of our operations. Backed by over 200 years of metal treatment experience, Kokkola is central to Umicore’s operations, driving the shift toward sustainability, circularity and resource efficiency.
